Three tapped for leadership roles at corporate Brown & Brown

Steve Boyd, Arrowhead president and COO, has moved into a larger role as senior vice president of technology, innovation and digital strategy for our parent company, Brown & Brown. In his new role, he works closely with B&B’s business segment leaders to finetune long-term technology roadmaps to develop innovative insurance products and solutions.

“I am excited to have Steve leading the team responsible for driving Brown & Brown’s ongoing digital transformation,” said President & CEO Powell Brown. “His experience as an operator and former CIO makes him well equipped to lead our technology efforts going forward. He has been a key driver of the Company’s innovation agenda for the last few years, and he brings the necessary blend of strategic vision and business acumen to advance our data and technology strategies.”

Jimmy Saldaña and Heather Wentworth have also transitioned from Arrowhead to Brown & Brown to collaborate with Boyd in technology innovations.

As director of strategic innovation, Saldaña has met with more than 200 InsurTech startups to scout new technologies to transform various aspects of insurance business. He joined Arrowhead in 2002 and spent 15 years in the Commercial Earthquake/DIC division as lead catastrophe modeler. In 2017 he became the director of strategic innovation for National Programs.

Heather Wentworth, director of digital distribution, works to build out our organizational capabilities around both digital distribution and data strategy. Alongside Brown & Brown business leaders, she helps them develop and implement their digital roadmap for the future. A recent addition to the team, Wentworth joined Arrowhead in July 2019. Prior to joining the firm, she spent a number of years working with both global carriers and brokers.

Arrowhead new leadership changes

Tom Kussurelis, former chief marketing officer, has been named executive vice president and chief operating officer. Kussurelis has led Arrowhead’s marketing across a broad group of programs, communications, branding and product development. He also serves on various leadership teams for development of business plans, acquisitions and InsurTech efforts.

In this new role he will further support leaders in specific commercial lines programs, along with additional shared services teams and initiatives. Kussurelis holds multiple professional designations, bringing decades of experience in leadership roles with carriers and agencies across a broad range of management, underwriting, operational and marketing disciplines.

David Putz has joined Arrowhead as executive vice president from Zurich Insurance North America. At Zurich for more than 24 years, he served most recently as head of Alternative Markets, responsible for $7+ billion in written premium.  In his new role, Putz will lead Arrowhead Automotive Aftermarket, Bellingham Underwriters and American Specialty. Drawing on his extensive background in the automotive industry, he will also work with other Brown & Brown groups and National Programs to create more robust automotive solutions.

Rich Dern, formerly central region business development leader for Core Commercial, has been tapped for the newly created role of director of business development, commercial field marketing. Dern works with business development leaders across multiple Arrowhead programs to achieve marketing and overall business goals.  As a former insurance agency owner, he understands the issues facing today’s producer.  In his new role, Dern looks forward to bringing more innovative solutions to producers and helping them grow.

Core Commercial transitions

New Core Commercial business development leaders (BDLs) have been named to redistribute territories and provide more personalized assistance to our producers.

Michele Mayer has been named as Core Commercial and Workers’ Compensation BDL for Northern California and Nevada. Mayer began her career at Arrowhead five years ago as Northern California Marketing Manager for our Workers’ Compensation Program. Her knowledge of many Arrowhead programs, specializing in Workers’ Comp and with broad experience in Core Commercial’s BOP and Package, Automotive Aftermarket and many others, puts her in good stead to help producers grow. Mayer was a part of the Phoenix Risk Management marketing team for seven years prior to joining Arrowhead.

Beth O’Reardon has been tapped as Core Commercial and Workers’ Compensation BDL for Southern California and Arizona. O’Reardon began her career at Arrowhead 12 years ago as marketing representative. She has been Southern California territory marketing manager for our Workers’ Compensation Program since 2011, working closely with producers to help them determine the best fit for their clients’ insurance needs, while encouraging risk management efforts to keep experience mods and rates low.

Mayer and O’Reardon are giving our West region BDL, Brett Barnsley, some much-needed aid. Barnsley is now responsible for 12 Western/Mid-West states. He also handles several other products and projects for Arrowhead, including relationships for producers in the Tribal program.

Vivian Carballo-Brown isn’t new to our producers, but she’s moving from a lead underwriting role back into a BDL role for many Central states. Prior to joining Arrowhead in 2017, she spent 16 years as a broker and account executive managing a range of business from small BOP accounts to complex risk transfer strategies. She’s managed carrier relationships and placement strategies and is well-versed at working closely with Operations, Compliance, Sales & Marketing and IT on various projects within brokerage organizations.

Alonzo A. Dunn, Jr. is adding to his existing territory, now covering the entire Eastern Seaboard plus many Gulf states. His 29 years of insurance and financial services experience includes 21 years at Allstate as operations and sales manager and exclusive agent. In an earlier sales leadership role with Farmers, he helped build their Georgia agency distribution system and was responsible for 238 agents, 38 employees and $140 million in annualized revenue. His exceptional balance of corporate responsibility and entrepreneur mindset makes him an excellent business development leader.
